The transatlantic slave trade sought to erase traditional African culture, stripping enslaved people of their language, customs, and even their hair. Black women were forced to cover their hair and abandon rituals that connected them to their homeland, under the threat of brutal punishment. This imagery reflects the stark choice enslaved women faced: reject their true identity or risk death.
