In the 1970s and 1980s, many Black women began to distance themselves from the intense Black Power narrative, which often emphasized the willingness to sacrifice one's life for the preservation of Black culture. The harsh reality was that too many Black people had already lost their lives in that struggle. As the movement waned, its symbolism faded as well. In response, women embraced more relaxed hairstyles, natural curls, and the vibrant party scene. After enduring so much, both Black women and men sought a form of escape, a way to cope and survive in a world that had tested them deeply.
